Alexander Green Publishes New Book on Maimonides’s Moral Psychology

Hamilton School Assistant Professor Alexander Green has published a new book, Maimonides’s Moral Psychology: The Emotions, the Virtues and the Good Life, with Oxford University Press.

The book challenges the conventional portrayal of Moses Maimonides as a thinker concerned primarily with reason and intellect. Green argues that emotions—including love, fear, courage, anger, humility and compassion—also occupy a central place in Maimonides’s understanding of a good life.

By examining the relationship between Aristotelian virtue and biblical ethics in Maimonides’s writings, Green demonstrates how contrasting emotional and philosophical approaches can serve as necessary correctives to one another.
