Hamilton School’s Dr. Allen Guelzo Awarded the Walter W. Buckley Jr. Prize in American History

The Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education is proud to announce that Dr. Allen C. Guelzo, Professor of Humanities at the Hamilton School, has been awarded the prestigious Walter W. Buckley Jr. Prize in American History.

Presented by the Driving Force Institute, the Buckley Prize recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to enhancing public understanding of American history. In keeping with the spirit of the award, the prize recipient designates a historical site or agency to receive the $30,000 prize award.

Dr. Guelzo has chosen Tolson’s Chapel in Sharpsburg, Maryland, as this year’s beneficiary. Built in 1866 by freedmen and their allies, Tolson’s Chapel served both as a church and a Freedmen’s Bureau school—offering newly emancipated African Americans a space for education, worship, and civic life in the heart of post-Civil War America. Today, it stands as a powerful monument to freedom and self-governance. Learn more at tolsonschapel.org.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Guelzo for this well-deserved recognition and his continued dedication to deepening the nation’s understanding of its past.
