Justice Charles T. Canady Named Incoming Director of the Hamilton School
The Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida is pleased to announce that Florida Supreme Court Justice Charles T. Canady has been appointed as its next Director, effective January 1, 2026.
Justice Canady brings more than forty years of public service across all three branches of government. He has served on the Florida Supreme Court since 2008, including three terms as Chief Justice, and is widely respected for his thoughtful jurisprudence and steady leadership.
Prior to his judicial career, Justice Canady served in both the Florida House of Representatives (1984–1990) and the U.S. House of Representatives (1993–2001). In Congress, he was a member of the House Judiciary Committee and chaired the Subcommittee on the Constitution for three terms. He later served as General Counsel to Governor Jeb Bush and was appointed to the Second District Court of Appeal in 2002.
Interim UF President Dr. Donald W. Landry praised the appointment, noting:
“Justice Canady’s vast experience and thoughtful jurisprudence make him an exceptional selection for this position. I have the utmost confidence in his ability to lead the Hamilton School.”
Justice Canady’s leadership comes at a pivotal moment as the Hamilton School continues its growth as a national model for classical and civic education. The University of Florida looks forward to welcoming him into this new role.
