Curtis Maughan

Director, Hamilton AI Lab and Digital Scholarship Librarian

Curtis Maughan is the director of the Hamilton AI Lab, where he leads a multidisciplinary team of humanities faculty and student programmers in the collaborative development of AI-enabled tools for teaching and research. In his previous role as the director of the World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio at the University of Arkansas, Maughan oversaw research initiatives, curricular development, and a robust calendar of events exploring the intersection of humanist thought and emerging technologies. The overarching thrust of his research and teaching agenda is the use of media and technology to reinvigorate the enduring questions of essential humanistic inquiry.

Current Project

The Hamilton AI Lab is a new collaborative initiative between the Hamilton School, the George A. Smathers Libraries, and UFIT Research Computing. As director of the Lab, Maughan oversees the development of digital research platforms and AI-focused curriculum; he also leads grant writing and publication initiatives. Additionally, Maughan is currently co-editing two collected volumes: Game-Based Approaches to CALL: The Theories and Technologies Shaping the Classroom of the Future (University of Toronto Publishing, forthcoming 2026) and German Gothic Literature: Variations, Adaptations, Transformations (Anthem Press, forthcoming 2026).
