The Hamilton School is pleased to host a book launch for Associate Professor Thornton Lockwood’s new work, Aristotle on Justice. Aristotle’s account of justice has shaped thinkers from Thomas Aquinas to Martha Nussbaum. Ideas such as distributive justice, equity, the common good, and the distinction between just and unjust political communities all find clear expression in his writings. Yet the intellectual and political world that formed those ideas is often left in the background. Lockwood places Aristotle’s treatment of justice in conversation with fourth-century thinkers including Plato, Xenophon, and Isocrates, and situates it within the institutions and experiences of the Greek city-states. The result is a richer understanding of the framework Aristotle himself presupposed. David Riesbeck of the University of California, Berkeley, has called the book “a comprehensive and unified interpretation” that offers “creative and thought-provoking readings” while remaining accessible to readers interested in the broader history of philosophy. Join us for a conversation about Aristotle, justice, and the classical foundations of political thought.
