Thornton Lockwood is Associate Professor of Humanities at the Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education. His research focuses on ancient Greek and Roman ethical and political thought and he is the author of Aristotle on Justice: The Virtues of Citizenship and Constitutions (currently in press at Cambridge University Press). He has co-edited Aristotle’s Politics: A Critical Guide (Cambridge University Press, 2015) and Aristote Politique VII: La constitution « selon nos vœux » (in Polis 36.1: 2019). His research on Aeschylus, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, and Cicero has been published in journals such as Phronesis, the Journal of the History of Philosophy, the Monist, Apeiron, Review of Politics, Ancient Philosophy, Dialogue: Canadian Philosophical Review, Classical World, and Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie. Recent publications include “The Partial Coherence of Cicero’s De officiis,” The Monist 108 (2025): 129–40; “Cicero’s Philosophy of Just War,” in A. Hahmann and M. Vazquez, eds., Cicero as Philosopher: New Perspectives on his Philosophy and its Legacy (De Gruyter, 2024), pp. 198–221; and “Artemisia of Halicarnassus: Herodotus’ excellent counsel,” Classical World 116 (2023): 147–172. He is also the Editor in Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Polis: The Journal for Ancient Greek and Roman Political Thought.
I am currently working on two book projects. One, tentatively entitled Aristotle, Ethics, and the Environment (currently under review at Routledge), examines how Aristotle’s thoughts about zoology and household management contribute to our understanding of his views about the natural world. A second, entitled The Aristotelian Oeconomica: Translation, commentary, and interpretive essays (currently under review at De Gruyter Brill), provides an exhaustive commentary and analysis on a work sometimes attributed to Aristotle, the Oeconomica.
